Mother Teresa - A Towering Figure in Indian Charity
A former senior accountant with Accuride Corporation, Michael Meyer now serves as an attorney in private practice. In addition to his endeavors as an attorney, Michael Meyer maintains a dedication to philanthropic initiatives such as God’s Grill. He also supports a range of nonprofit groups that work with underserved communities in India.
Despite having one of the fastest growing economies in the world, wide swaths of India are still in the early stages of economic development and are home to large populations living in poverty. Over the decades, numerous nonprofit groups, NGOs, and international task forces have created programs targeting underserved communities. This work carries on the tradition of Mother Teresa, a pioneering figure in Indian community outreach.
Born to an Albanian family in Macedonia in 1910, Mother Teresa felt the call of service as a young girl and joined a Catholic religious order at the age of 18. Soon after, she traveled to India to begin work as a teacher in Calcutta. After nearly two decades teaching at an inner-city Calcutta school, she decided to spend the rest of her life serving the sickest and poorest members of the community and founded the Order of the Missionaries of Charity in 1950.
Over the next several decades, Mother Teresa lived and worked among the people she served, starting numerous health care, food, and education programs for the neediest populations in the country. Meanwhile, her order spread across the globe, with thousands of volunteers and missionaries bringing her message of service to nearly every continent. The recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, Mother Teresa has become synonymous with charity, not just in India, but across the world.
