Oscars Adding New Popular Films Award Category
Holding a juris doctor from the University of Louisville, Michael Meyer is a Florida-based attorney with 19 years of experience. When he isn't working to expand his practice, Michael Meyer enjoys watching recently released films.
In an effort to boost ratings for the Oscars TV broadcast, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making widespread changes for the 2019 edition of the annual awards show. The biggest change is the new Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film category, which is designed to reward money-making blockbuster films over those judged for their artistic merits. However, according to The Academy, films can earn nominations for both outstanding achievement in popular film and best picture if warranted. Some of the movies released in 2018 that could qualify for the new award include Avengers: Infinity War, A Quiet Place, Black Panther, and Incredibles 2.
The 2018 Oscars was the least-watched Oscars of all-time and lasted nearly four hours but next year's broadcast will be limited to three hours to better maintain viewer engagement. As a result of the shorter broadcast, certain categories will be presented between commercial breaks with the winners being aired in edited segments later in the broadcast.
