Supporting a Spouse Facing Cancer

Through his private law firm, Fort Lauderdale attorney Michael Meyer has provided legal representation and counsel for almost 20 years. Outside of his work as an attorney, Michael Meyer supports charitable organizations focused on cancer research as a result of his wife’s battle with the disease.

When a spouse is diagnosed with cancer, it is an emotional and difficult experience for both partners. Experts recommend the following behaviors to maintain a strong relationship throughout the treatment and recovery process.

Communication - In order to convey their thoughts and emotions clearly, partners should use ‘’I’’ statements and avoid generalizations. Respecting each other’s views and listening without interrupting makes both partners feel heard and supported.

Decision Making - Partners should discuss any major treatment options and long-term care plans and make decisions as a team. Spouses can decide which life-altering decisions should be made as a couple and which will be made solely by the partner battling cancer.

Support - Both partners can benefit from talking to a third party. Spouses can join support groups or speak to a specially-trained counselor to help them through the process.

Oscars Adding New Popular Films Award Category

Holding a juris doctor from the University of Louisville, Michael Meyer is a Florida-based attorney with 19 years of experience. When he isn't working to expand his practice, Michael Meyer enjoys watching recently released films.

In an effort to boost ratings for the Oscars TV broadcast, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making widespread changes for the 2019 edition of the annual awards show. The biggest change is the new Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film category, which is designed to reward money-making blockbuster films over those judged for their artistic merits. However, according to The Academy, films can earn nominations for both outstanding achievement in popular film and best picture if warranted. Some of the movies released in 2018 that could qualify for the new award include Avengers: Infinity War, A Quiet Place, Black Panther, and Incredibles 2.

The 2018 Oscars was the least-watched Oscars of all-time and lasted nearly four hours but next year's broadcast will be limited to three hours to better maintain viewer engagement. As a result of the shorter broadcast, certain categories will be presented between commercial breaks with the winners being aired in edited segments later in the broadcast.

The Juris Doctor Curriculum at the University of Louisville

Michael Meyer serves as an attorney in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he manages his own practice. Prior to establishing himself as an attorney, Michael Meyer graduated with honors from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law.

The University of Louisville’s 90-hour JD program caters to the needs of both full-time and part-time students. Students can choose between the three-year, full-time study program and the four- to five-year, part-time program.

Full-time students begin with a first-year fall and spring semester of 30 hours of study, while part-time students receive a reduced course load with additional options. Required courses for first-year students include lawyering skills, contracts, torts, criminal law, property, and civil procedure.

After the first year, students can select from a range of upper-level courses and explore different legal disciplines. These courses allow students to customize their education and pursue a concentration in a particular area. In addition, upper-level courses provide opportunities for interdisciplinary study and externships.
