Mother Teresa - A Towering Figure in Indian Charity
A former senior accountant with Accuride Corporation, Michael Meyer now serves as an attorney in private practice. In addition to his endeavors as an attorney, Michael Meyer maintains a dedication to philanthropic initiatives such as God’s Grill. He also supports a range of nonprofit groups that work with underserved communities in India.
Despite having one of the fastest growing economies in the world, wide swaths of India are still in the early stages of economic development and are home to large populations living in poverty. Over the decades, numerous nonprofit groups, NGOs, and international task forces have created programs targeting underserved communities. This work carries on the tradition of Mother Teresa, a pioneering figure in Indian community outreach.
Born to an Albanian family in Macedonia in 1910, Mother Teresa felt the call of service as a young girl and joined a Catholic religious order at the age of 18. Soon after, she traveled to India to begin work as a teacher in Calcutta. After nearly two decades teaching at an inner-city Calcutta school, she decided to spend the rest of her life serving the sickest and poorest members of the community and founded the Order of the Missionaries of Charity in 1950.
Over the next several decades, Mother Teresa lived and worked among the people she served, starting numerous health care, food, and education programs for the neediest populations in the country. Meanwhile, her order spread across the globe, with thousands of volunteers and missionaries bringing her message of service to nearly every continent. The recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, Mother Teresa has become synonymous with charity, not just in India, but across the world.

NBA All-Star Game Draft to Be Televised
Michael Meyer draws upon nearly 20 years of relevant experience in his role as an attorney. Outside of his work as an attorney, Michael Meyer is a passionate basketball fan.
Last year, the NBA adopted a new format for its annual All-Star Game. Instead of a showdown between the best players in the Eastern and Western Conferences, the league allowed the player with the most fan votes from each conference to serve as a team captain and choose their respective teams regardless of conference. The other All-Star starters were selected based on voting from fans, media, and players while the league’s head coaches chose the reserve players. Steph Curry and LeBron James served as captains last year, and what resulted was an entertaining 148-145 win by Team LeBron.
James felt last year’s draft was an enjoyable process, and now the NBA is allowing fans to see just how the new draft format works. According to Marc Stein of The New York Times, the players have agreed to televise the draft, which is expected to be broadcast on January 30 or 31, depending on team captain availability. The game itself is scheduled for February 17, 2019.

New Study Links Aspirin to Increased Percentage of Cancer Survival
An attorney with nearly 20 years of legal experience, Michael Meyer is a dedicated philanthropist who supports charitable causes in Indiana. Outside of his work as an attorney and philanthropic efforts, Michael Meyer enjoys spending time with his wife, who is a cancer survivor.
While there is still no cure for cancer, scientists are routinely making discoveries to help assist with treatment and pain management. A recent study conducted by scientists at Cardiff University looked at the use of aspirin to increase chances of survival for those diagnosed with various forms of cancer. Researchers analyzed 71 different studies on the effects of the drug and compared survival rates of 120,000 cancer patients who took a low dosage of aspirin with 400,000 patients who didn't.
The results of the study suggested that colon cancer patients who took an aspirin per day had a 25 percent increase in chance of survival. Similarly, survival rates improved for individuals with breast cancer (20 percent) and prostate cancer (15 percent). This builds upon a 2016 Harvard study, which specifically found a link between aspirin usage and increased survival rates among those with bowel cancer.

Three Nonprofit Groups Working in India
A graduate of the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, Michael Meyer has worked as an attorney in private practice since 1999. A dedicated philanthropist in addition to his work as an attorney, Michael Meyer supports a range of charities that provide outreach to underserved communities in India.
Though India’s economy has grown at a rapid rate in recent decades, the country still suffers from areas of extreme poverty, widespread economic disparity, and regions with poor infrastructure, schools, and public health programs. Over the years, numerous nonprofit organizations and charities have stepped in to provide the people in these demographics with additional opportunities. Here are three of the largest:
Indian Development and Relief Fund (IDRF): Founded over 30 years ago, IDRF employs a strategy of funding local NGOs and nonprofit groups on the ground in India. IDRF guides programs and partnerships across a range of sectors, including education, women’s empowerment, and environmental initiatives.
Helping Hands for India: This education-focused nonprofit group raises money to build schools, buy supplies, and hire teachers in underserved areas of India. Most recently, the charity funded the construction of a school in rural Pritamgarh that serves 300 students.
Association for India’s Development (AID): For more than 25 years, AID has provided funding, empowerment programs, and legislative advocacy in support of equitable development throughout India. The organization’s 36 chapters and more than 800 volunteers work on projects cutting across sectors, including agriculture, education, and health care.

Supporting a Spouse Facing Cancer
Through his private law firm, Fort Lauderdale attorney Michael Meyer has provided legal representation and counsel for almost 20 years. Outside of his work as an attorney, Michael Meyer supports charitable organizations focused on cancer research as a result of his wife’s battle with the disease.
When a spouse is diagnosed with cancer, it is an emotional and difficult experience for both partners. Experts recommend the following behaviors to maintain a strong relationship throughout the treatment and recovery process.
Communication - In order to convey their thoughts and emotions clearly, partners should use ‘’I’’ statements and avoid generalizations. Respecting each other’s views and listening without interrupting makes both partners feel heard and supported.
Decision Making - Partners should discuss any major treatment options and long-term care plans and make decisions as a team. Spouses can decide which life-altering decisions should be made as a couple and which will be made solely by the partner battling cancer.
Support - Both partners can benefit from talking to a third party. Spouses can join support groups or speak to a specially-trained counselor to help them through the process.

Oscars Adding New Popular Films Award Category
Holding a juris doctor from the University of Louisville, Michael Meyer is a Florida-based attorney with 19 years of experience. When he isn't working to expand his practice, Michael Meyer enjoys watching recently released films.
In an effort to boost ratings for the Oscars TV broadcast, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making widespread changes for the 2019 edition of the annual awards show. The biggest change is the new Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film category, which is designed to reward money-making blockbuster films over those judged for their artistic merits. However, according to The Academy, films can earn nominations for both outstanding achievement in popular film and best picture if warranted. Some of the movies released in 2018 that could qualify for the new award include Avengers: Infinity War, A Quiet Place, Black Panther, and Incredibles 2.
The 2018 Oscars was the least-watched Oscars of all-time and lasted nearly four hours but next year's broadcast will be limited to three hours to better maintain viewer engagement. As a result of the shorter broadcast, certain categories will be presented between commercial breaks with the winners being aired in edited segments later in the broadcast.
